Dragonfly wing nodus: a one-way hinge contributing to the asymmetric wing deformation

Nodus is a specialized component of dragonfly wings. We demonstrated that although the presence of resilin in the nodus facilitates the wing deformability in flight, the specific geometry of the nodus restrains its displacements when subjected to pressure on the ventral side. This effect results in an interlocking mechanism and contributes to dorso-ventral asymmetry of wing deformations.
