A first step towards understanding principles underlying the design of biological structures is to characterize their material properties. However, direct mechanical measurements on biological samples encounter numerous technical challenges. We developed a novel method for three-dimensional visualisation of the elastic modulus over volume of insect cuticle. This is a cutting edge method which eliminates the need for expensive, time-consuming mechanical tests and is especially important for finite element analysis of this often graded biological material.
