This project aims at improving the understanding of autofluorescences that are exhibited by arthropod exoskeletons. By visualizing these autofluorescences, it is possible to reveal differences in the autofluorescence composition that indicate differences in the material composition of the analysed exoskeleton structures. In the course of the project, the autofluorescence properties and potential influences of various preparation methods on these properties will be studied in detail. If it is possible and/or necessary, the obtained information will be used to further develop and improve a frequently applied confocal laser scanning microscopy method in a way that (1) the autofluorescence visualization becomes more precise and efficient and (2) the potential occurrence of artefacts as a result of preparation methods is avoided.
